Behind The Scenes Of Project Royalty
Everything you need to know about my current Work In Progress
Hello, friends, and welcome back to the Kindness Cafe! If you’ve been here a while, you’ve probably heard me talk about my current work in progress here and there, which I’ve dubbed Project Royalty (for now). To make it easier to learn about my project, I decided to converge all of the information about PR into one post – the one you’re reading right now.
In this post, I’ll talk about what my project is about, the characters involved, and the history (and next steps) of Project Royalty. There’s a lot to get into, so let’s get started!
What Is Project Royalty About?
Project Royalty is a fantasy-esque middle-grade series about a young prince and his group of friends who are trying to save their loved ones from an evil villain. The first draft currently stands at 35,000 words.
I first got the idea for Project Royalty from re-re-RE-reading The Chronicles of Narnia series when I was thirteen. As I laid in bed one night, I couldn’t get the idea of the four kings and queens of Narnia out of my head. Suddenly my brain came up with an idea, “What would have happened if Peter and Susan had been kidnapped…and left Edmund and Lucy behind?”
Over the next few years, that idea of writing about the rulers transformed to writing about their children. I wondered what it would be like to be part of a family who was sheltered and scared for their lives – and rebelling against those rules to rescue their aunt and uncle. Thus began Project Royalty.
Who Are The Characters?
If you’ve noticed the “Character Profiles” in your inbox, you’ve probably gotten to know quite a few of my characters by now. The profiles go out every first week of the month, and I currently have nine profiles available on my Substack. They detail more about each character in my book.
The Main Characters:
All of the characters below are the main “good guy” characters who are either on the quest or in the book!
The Prince: The main character of my story! He is the one who starts the quest and sets the whole story in motion.
The Cousin: The Prince’s cousin and the other POV character for the story. She’s left behind at the start of the book and has a few adventures of her own before joining the quest!
The Protector: The royal bodyguard for a neighboring country.
The Explorer: One of the princesses from a neighboring country (who is under The Protector’s watch).
The Painter: A young woman who likes to paint.
The Elf: An elven prince who lives in The Prince’s country.
The Raven-Haired: The Elf’s fiancee and local weapons expert.
The Lost One (profile not out yet): A straggler from a neighboring desert town.
Side Characters:
The Innkeeper: The proprietor of the finest inn in Ribinskiff, where The Painter lives in the beginning of the novel.
The Goddaughter: The goddaughter of the Innkeeper and the “hospitality crew” of the inn.
The Wagon Master: The owner and lead driver of a wagon company that operates in Ribinskiff; he is good friends with The Innkeeper and Goddaughter.
The Innkeeper, Goddaughter, and Wagon Master also all appear in my published short story, Cecil’s Conundrum, which you can buy here!
Where Are The Settings?
In November of 2025, I also started adding “Setting Profiles”, detailing more about each city, region, or country that is in Project Royalty. I have four available on my Substack currently!
Ribinskiff (The Town): Home to the Innkeeper, Goddaughter, and Wagon Master, Ribinskiff is a declining town known for its delicious fish.
Hodridge (The Town): The capital of the country of Sailim, it is home to the Sailim royals The Prince, The Cousin, and their families.
Cloviahurst (The Town): The capital of the country of Clovia, it is home to the Clovian royals and their bodyguards, The Explorer and The Protector among them.
Oakwood (The Enclave): A kingdom inside of Sailim, Oakwood is ruled by elves and is where The Elf and The Raven-Haired live.
Updates on the Project:
I started Project Royalty in March 2021 and finished the first draft in April 2024. Since 2024, I’ve been working towards my second draft. I took a long break from the manuscript, then I dove back in, enjoying mapmaking, worldbuilding, and reverse outlining. I started my second draft in August 2025!
My goal is to finish my second draft by the end of this coming school year, so stick around to see if I reach it.
Do you have any questions about Project Royalty? I’d love to hear them in the comments section below!
