#2: The Interview
Introduce yourself!
Hello, I’m the Painter! I’m a professional painter that lives in the kingdom the Prince and his Cousin are from.
Can you also describe yourself?
Sure! I have purple hair that reaches just below my shoulders, green eyes, and fawny skin with plenty of freckles.
What is your favorite piece of clothing?
My absolute favorite piece of clothing would have to be my overalls. I get a new pair every year around the winter solstice, and by that time, they’re usually torn and covered in paint and…you get the picture.
You paint? That’s really cool! What do you like to paint? What’s your favorite piece you’ve painted?
I think my favorite thing to paint is landscape portraits. My favorite piece is a purple sailboat sailing in the middle of a glistening body of water. It’s based off of a painting my mother painted a long time ago!
Oh, that’s awesome! Where do you live?
I live in an inn not far from the country’s capital. I’m good friends with the inn’s owner and proprietor, and I’ve lived here for years! It’s a beautiful place year round.
What’s your favorite food?
Strawberry ice cream. It’s delicious!
What’s your favorite color?
I’d have to say a very rich purple, like my hair. It’s always been one of my favorite colors.
What’s your favorite place to be?
Definitely the library in the inn! I love painting amongst all the books. It’s so cozy and beautiful there.
What’s your weakness?
Because I work on lots of creative projects, sometimes I get disorganized. My workspace gets pretty cluttered — I’m working on breaking the habit, though!
What’s your strength?
I’m really creative, and I love using that creativity to come up with unique solutions to any problem.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I enjoyed this interview – thanks, Addie!
#3: The Snippet
Koker was woken by a sudden movement. She blinked, rubbing sleep from her eyes, and noticed the wagon had stopped.
Memories of her dream lingered in the back of her mind, but she waved them away and focused on the landscape in front of her. She was in a town she vaguely remembered, with brown and black houses all jammed near a huge fishing port. In the distance, she could see a riverboat chugging away from the dock on the edge of town. The air was humid, and dark clouds gathered in the distance.
“Miss?”
The man who had driven her jumped down from the wagon. He had messy brown hair with a beard and a kind smile. “We’re here. I’ll get you to a friend I know.”
He carefully helped her down from the wagon and around the corner to a large brick building with yellow curtains. The words “This inn looks wonderful” formed on her lips, but she couldn’t push them out. So she just swallowed them and followed the man into the inn, careful to pull her hood over her new short purple hair.
The inn’s lobby was quiet and dark. Lanterns hanging on the walls were the only source of light. Koker noticed a large mahogany table strewn with maps and notebooks open to various pages. A large brass bell with small signs of rust lay on the right side of the table. It said For The Management.
Koker wordlessly took the bell and offered it to the man, who shook his head. “No worries. I know how to get Luciana’s attention.”
He motioned for her to cover her ears, then yelled up the flight of stairs, “Luciana! I’ve got a delivery for you!”
A woman rushed down the stairs, her thick red hair bouncing up and down as she came towards them. Her boots thumped loudly on the wood floors. “Ah! So this is her, then.”
Koker blinked. How did Luciana already know about her?
The two adults exchanged information in quiet whispers for a few minutes before the man nodded, hugged Luciana, and stood in front of Koker. “You’ll be safe here until you want to leave. Luciana will give you room and board at no charge, and you’re free to roam around here and Ribinskiff as long as you like.” He hesitated, like he was about to say something else, but he shook his head. “Oh, I forgot your trunk, miss. Let me bring it.”
He hurried out the door, and Koker turned to see Luciana smiling at her. “I hope you’ll be happy here. I must admit I don’t know much about…teenagers, but I’ll try to do my best.”
Koker grinned. The words “I already like it here” bubbled up in her throat, but she just smiled again and nodded. She knew Luciana would understand.
The door creaked open again, and the brown-haired man came in with a small trunk, setting it down carefully in front of Koker. “Pretty lightweight, miss. I wonder if you have anything in there at all!” He laughed, then said quickly, “I have to go. Promise me you’ll enjoy yourself?”
Koker nodded, then took a bag of gold coins from her pocket and handed it to him. He looked at her. “Are you sure you can spare this much?”
She nodded again, more vigorously. The man smiled and left. Only after the door swung shut behind him did Koker realize he had never given her his name.
Luciana cleared her throat. “I’ve already picked out your room. Let me show you…”
