Hello, friends! It’s officially 2025 now, which is kind of wild! There are always a lot of resolutions and goals floating around this time of year, which is why I’m chiming in with my three-step process to achieve the writing goals you’re setting at the beginning of the year. I’d love to hear in the comments below if you have any plans you use to achieve the goals you set!
Okay, I’ll admit it right up front: I’m not really a resolution type of person. Usually I go with broader goals, like “Read 200 books this year” or “Finish your book’s first draft” – both of which I did in 2024!
Here are some steps for getting your New Year’s writing goals down on paper and ready to accomplish.
Spend 10-15 minutes writing down ideas.
It’s the start of a new year, so right now’s the perfect time to dump ALL of your writing goals down on a piece of paper. Want to start a social media account for young readers? Write it down. What about searching for a publisher or agent for your first novel? Write that down too!
Organize your ideas by how easy/hard they are.
Some of your goals might be super easy – like writing two paragraphs a day. And some might be harder, like trying to finish writing your book by December. Prioritizing your goals helps you see how dedicated you need to be for each – so you know how much time you need to set aside to achieve your goal.
Get into a routine.
Once you start working on your goals at a specific time or in a specific place, it’ll be easier to be consistent. If you set aside time every week to work on your writing, then you’ll have a lot more chapters of work than if you didn’t set aside time.
