Have you ever been incredibly grateful for something? Maybe it was a life-changing moment or a person did something nice for you? This year, I’m grateful for writing. Maybe that’s because I’ve only been seriously writing for three years, and I’m still a little in shock about how it has changed my life.
Writing is the one thing that’s grounded me for the last few years. I’m not referring to grounded like “stay in your room for a week,” but the act of grounding oneself in the Earth.
A few years ago, around this time, I was feeling worried. I thought no one liked me. I was nervous because I was about to go into homeschooled high school – something I had never done before. I felt pretty anxious and didn’t know what to expect.
And then I rediscovered writing.
Writing became my outlet. I poured myself into it. And then, I found the online writing community for teen writers that would shape my life even further.
I started making new friends. I started feeling confident. I started speaking up and joining conversations and stepping into the part of myself I had always been uncomfortable sharing. I started sharing my work in progress, my story about my character Caleb and his journey to save the ones he misses the most. And then, last year, I got to meet my writer friends at an in-person writing retreat.
In April, I finished the first draft of my story. I wrote a book. All because of that one little spark, I’m here, writing a Substack and putting myself out into the world. I can never explain how grateful I am that I decided to write again. I’m grateful for the journey I’m taking, and the destinations I’ll reach eventually.
What are you grateful for? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. I hope everyone has a wonderful week, whether you’re celebrating Thanksgiving (or already did!).
