The World Is Quiet Here: A Look At A Series Of Unfortunate Events
An overview of one of my new favorite TV shows!
Note: this post features spoilers for both the books and TV show, so if you haven’t seen them and don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading!
Hello, friends, and welcome to another post from The Kindness Cafe! Today I am talking about the book series and TV show A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Over the past few months, I have been binge watching all three seasons with a family member, and last Sunday, we finally finished watching the entire show. Even the show came out in 2017, I thoroughly loved it nonetheless.
Since the books and show are pretty similar in terms of plot and characters, I am going to give a brief overview of the books, followed by my thoughts on both the books and the show as a whole.
There’s a lot to get into, so let’s get started!
The Books:
A Series of Unfortunate Events is about three siblings, Violet, Sunny, and Klaus Baudelaire, who find out that both of their parents have died in a mysterious fire and that they are orphans. They are passed from guardian to guardian in hopes of finding a safe home to grow up in while they come of age to use the fortune their parents left behind. But unfortunately, they are chased by the ruthless Count Olaf, who wants their fortune and will stop at nothing to get it, including kidnapping them, killing their guardians, and making their lives miserable.
The plot gets even more complicated when the children find out that their parents and Count Olaf were in a secret organization called VFD together and VFD separated into two sides: the side that fights fires and the side that creates them. As more and more people get involved in the Baudelaires’ plight and the stakes get higher and higher, the three children must figure out how to save VFD and get rid of Count Olaf once and for all.
The books are divided into 13 volumes (almost all of them with 13 chapters) written by Lemony Snicket, who is also a character involved in the story. The fun thing about the way the books are written is that we not only get the Baudelaires’ story, but we get glimpses at the other VFD members and their backstory as well.
The books are as follows:
The Bad Beginning (in which the Baudelaires find they are orphans and go to live with Count Olaf)
The Reptile Room (in which the Baudelaires go to live with their Uncle Monty and witness an impossible murder)
The Wide Window (in which the Baudelaires live with a woman who is terrified of everything — including real estate agents)
The Miserable Mill (in which the Baudelaires live in a mill, get hypnotized, eat way too much gum, and have multiple mishaps)
The Austere Academy (in which the Baudelaires go to boarding school, make two new friends, and run way too many laps)
The Vile Village (in which the Baudelaires live in a crow-infested town, get accused of murder, and break out of a jail)
The Ersatz Elevator (in which the Baudelaires live with extremely rich people, fall down an elevator shaft, and eat lots of salmon)
The Hostile Hospital (in which the Baudelaires pose as doctors in a hospital to rescue Violet from harm)
The Carnivorous Carnival (in which the Baudelaires meet a fortune-teller, learn more about VFD, and almost get eaten by lions)
The Slippery Slope (in which the Baudelaires find a VFD hideout, make more enemies, and find a new friend)
The Grim Grotto (in which the Baudelaires pilot a submarine, find a deadly fungus, and meet an old enemy again)
The Penultimate Peril (in which the Baudelaires pose as concierges in a hotel where everyone looks familar)
The End (in which the Baudelaires wash up on a desert island and must face Count Olaf — and the truth — once and for all)
As you can see, the number of books is astounding (as well as incredibly unlucky), but they were fun to read and definitely contributed to my reading goal for 2025.
My favorite part about the books was the dry wit and humor that Lemony Snicket brought to the page. Just when it gets too dark, Mr. Snicket chimes in with a well-placed comment such as, ‘If you are allergic to a thing, it is best not to put that thing in your mouth, particularly if the thing is cats.’
But of course, I also loved the main characters. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are wonderful protagonists that find themselves in truly terrifying circumstances, but they don’t give up, even when things look grim. Count Olaf is a horrifying villain that you can’t help but hate right up to the last page. And the assorted characters — whether VFD, evil, or bystanders —make the books even better.
The TV Show:
The TV show A Series of Unfortunate Events is so similar to the books that I don’t think I need to recap it. Here are my favorite parts about the show:
The casting is amazing. Neil Patrick Harris plays Count Olaf, with Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, and Presley Smith as Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, respectively. There are also quite a few side characters — Patrick Warburton is Lemony Snicket, Lucy Punch is the delightfully evil Esme Squalor, and one of my favorite actors, Tony Hale, makes a few appearances in the show as well!
The TV show’s biggest change is adding more backstory on VFD and the more crucial members of the organization, including the Baudelaires, Snickets, and Quagmires. Throughout the show, we are constantly interrupted by Lemony Snicket, but we are also shown scenes without the Baudelaires (something that doesn’t happen often in the book) that give us more backstory on the world as a whole.
The sets are amazing. Almost every set was built on a soundstage and the detail is incredible. I also loved the costumes, especially when it came to Esme Squalor’s fashionable outfits!
My Opinion:
I personally love the TV show more than the books, because the TV show expands on the books and makes the material even better. I’d definitely recommend reading the books first and then watching the TV show, because I really loved the books too!
Let me know if you’ve read or watched A Series of Unfortunate Events in the comments below! If you haven’t, do you want to? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day – thanks for reading, and keep on being kind! 💖
