When You Are Small
- a short poem for you -
When you are small You think you have wings They flutter and flap as you try new things You’re not scared to fall Until you are five And that new jungle gym feels way too high You realize the fears you carry around Sometimes feel safer when you’re on the ground And then you are ten And choir is new Your voice rings out, and the wings flutter too But better is theater; to act and to dance You wish it was forever, but it ends so fast Losing your balance is like losing control And when you are twelve, the balls start to roll You find yourself flailing for something to do Then you try writing a sentence or two And your wings start to flap and flitter anew Sometimes your wings are scared to fly Stall out in the middle of the sky But always, always, you try to fly Now you are big And your wings are big too Learning how to say “no, thank you” Your time is important And “yes”’es are fun If you stay true to yourself when all’s said and done When I was little, I thought I had wings And those wings can do incredible things Now I am older And now I can see It was those wings That were carrying me.
