Why The Kindness Cafe?
The reason for the name!
Hi, Everyone!
When I first envisioned starting a Substack, I didn’t quite know what I wanted—or what I was getting myself into. It’s been a challenge for me to sit down and write posts that sound fun (but not too informal), while also not sounding like Professor Binns from Harry Potter. (If you understood that reference, we’re kindred spirits already. 😉)
I am a person who loves conversation. If we have something in common, I could talk to you about it for hours. I also love writing because it’s characters interacting and explaining and talking over each other in one big, beautiful mess.
And that’s where The Kindness Cafe comes in. For years, I’ve longed to run a bookstore where you can come in and peruse the shelves, enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and a freshly baked cookie. I want it to be a place where there’s a lively discussion of Narnia or Lord of the Rings in a corner.
But since I can’t conjure a bookstore from thin air, this Substack is the online incarnation of that dream. This is a place where you can sit at your desk with a cup of tea and find conversations about books and writing and movies. This is a place where anyone is welcome to jump in for thoughtful, fun conversation.
When you read my posts, I want you to feel inspired to share your opinion. For example, if you wish Samwise Gamgee was the main character in LOTR instead of Frodo Baggins, share about it! But I also want to share experiences as fellow readers and/or writers: how many words do you have in your Work In Progress or how far have you read in your book?
With this in mind, the next few posts from The Kindness Cafe will be filled with questions for you to answer, related to the topic on hand. You don’t have to share, but if you feel inspired or want to add to the conversation, feel free to comment.
I hope you think of The Kindness Cafe as a fun place where you not only get to read my thoughts on things, but share yours. This community is as much as your place as it is mine, and I’m so excited to welcome y’all in!
As always, thank you for reading this post, and keep on being kind! 💖
