Writing in the Spring
How to make the most of this beautiful season
Hello, friends, and welcome to another post by The Kindness Cafe! Today I’m going to be talking about writing in the spring — more specifically, the ups, the downs, and the tips and tricks that will help us become better writers this season.
There’s a lot to get into, so let’s get started!
Pros of Writing in the Spring:
Spring is a wonderful time to write because it feels like an in-between of winter and summer: the temperature, weather, and productivity go up and down from day to day. Writing during this time of year is fun because spring makes you feel like you can do anything, especially writing. Here are some of my pros for writing in the spring:
It’s becoming warmer!
With spring in full bloom, the weather is getting nicer outside, which means I can start opening windows while I’m working on my book.
There are more spots to write.
With the warmer weather, I’ve been able to sit outside on my porch and patio, which has been so nice! When the house gets too crowded and I can’t concentrate, sometimes I go outside with a blanket and my notebook to write in the grass in my backyard.
Lemonade and iced tea are perfect!
I love lemonade so much. It’s such a great beverage, and now that it’s getting warmer, I can have my favorite summer drink. I’ve also been experimenting with iced green tea, which is not only good for you but also delicious!
Cons of Writing in the Spring:
School. (Need I say more?)
Writing is tricky to balance with school as it wraps up, especially if you have special occasions or events that fall at the end of the school year. Spring is the season of final exams and moving from one grade to the next, so it can be hard to add writing to the list of things to consistently work on.
Allergies.
If you’re like me and have allergies thanks to an unknown source (seriously, I get allergies in every season 🙄), then it can be super hard to concentrate on schoolwork and writing when you’re sneezing every two minutes. Thank goodness for allergy medicine.
Tips and Tricks to Squeeze In Writing Time:
Use your spare minutes to make progress.
If you have time between classes, use some of those minutes to work on your writing project. Even when you can’t sit down to work on your book for a solid hour, working in twelve blocks of five minutes still gets you somewhere.
Busyness is normal.
Acknowledge that sometimes you’re going to be busy, which is normal and valid. I wrote about this last winter if you’d like more tips!
Join a writing challenge.
Writing challenges are super fun and a great way to get the words flowing. I tend to do writing challenges in November and January – although I also do personal writing challenges every month, tracking how many words I can write.
Be proud of your words, whether it’s 1 or 100!
The biggest, most important step is to be proud of your work. You wrote, even if it was just one word, one sentence, or one paragraph. I know it’s easy to get into the depths of self-doubt, but you’ve got this.
